Cleanliness Next to Godliness

In a time where we’ve been in a national pandemic for over a year now, I’m sure many of us never imagined our lives to change this much, for so long. I would imagine many of us have made adoption of the new norms. In the beauty industry, it is already expected that keep all beauty tools and equipment sanitary and clean. This pandemic has further fortified my beauty OCD. Since the start of the pandemic, I purchased many disinfectants, more Barbicide, additional aprons, masks, gloves, and several additional brush sets for my clients. Even before the pandemic, it was important to not reuse soiled brushes on multiple clients even following brief cleaning & disinfectant breaks. After each client, I take all the brushes through a thorough cleaning process. It wasn’t until a client asked me casually how should she clean her brushes at home. I decided to write this entry.

How to clean makeup brushes and sponges:

  1. Wet the bristles with lukewarm water. If you choose to submerge your brushes in water, be mindful of the materials the brushes are made of. If your brush tools are made of wood, do not submerge, the water will cause the wood to swell and crack.

  2. Place a drop of your cleanser of choice into the palm of your clean hand. When using a solid brush cleanser, lather your brush thoroughly.

  3. Gently massage the tips of the bristles in your palm or use a brush cleaning tool.

  4. Rinse the bristles thoroughly.

  5. Squeeze out the excess moisture with a clean towel.

  6. Re-form the brush head back into its original shape.

  7. Let the brush dry with its bristles hanging off the edge of a counter, which allows it to dry in the correct shape. Never let your brushes dry on a towel — the bristles can turn mildewy. Also never let your brush dry upright, your brushes can dry and cause decay at the base of your brush.

I personally prefer goat milk soap for cleaning my brushes, the milk helps condition the hairs of the brushes to ensure longevity. In access to cleaning always knowing when to toss brushes are important, frayed brush hairs damaged tools, and stained beyond repair.
